Calculating IELTS Reading band scores is a critical aspect of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), it is a globally recognised exam used to assess individuals' English language proficiency. Understanding the precise method behind this calculation is essential for test-takers aiming to achieve their desired band scores.
In this blog, we will explore how IELTS Reading band scores are calculated, and the relationship between raw scores and band scores. Whether you're preparing for the IELTS or simply seeking a better understanding of the scoring process, this blog will provide you with the insights you need to score high in your IELTS Reading test.
The Reading test has 40 questions centred around three texts, with a variety of question types, including multiple-choice, identifying information, assessing writer's views or claims, matching information, headings, features, sentence endings, summary, notes, table, diagram label or flow-chart completion, and short-answer questions.
In the Reading test, you earn one point for each correct answer. Your cumulative correct responses establish your raw score, from which your ultimate band score is derived. It's essential to attempt all questions, as unanswered questions give no marks.
It's worth noting that the structure of the Reading component differs between the Academic and General Training IELTS tests. However, the number and types of questions remain consistent across various IELTS test formats.
For the Reading test, you will address 40 questions based on three lengthy texts, with each query having a single correct response. Your overall marks contribute to your Reading band score, which subsequently contributes to your overall band score.
