The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an internationally recognised English language proficiency test that is widely accepted by employers around the world. The requirement of IELTS for work may vary depending on the employer, industry, and position being applied for. Read further to know more about the IELTS for work.

What is IELTS?

The International English language testing system (IELTS) is the most renowned English language proficiency test accepted by more than 12,000 institutions and organisations worldwide. There are two modules for the test- IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training.

This test is divided into four sections – Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. While you’re Listening, Reading and Writing tests are taken on the same day, your Speaking test can be taken before or after the other three.

Why take IELTS for work purposes?

In general, employers may require applicants to provide proof of their English language proficiency as a part of their job application procedure, especially for positions that involve communication skills to communicate with clients or colleagues from different countries. IELTS is often considered a reliable and credible way to demonstrate language proficiency, and some employers may specifically require a minimum score on the test as a part of their recruitment process.

Which industries ask for IELTS?

Most of the organisations that ask for IELTS are from the healthcare field, other professional bodies, and other sectors which require a strong and fluent English language ability. For example:

  • Nursing

  • Medicine and pharmacy

  • Accounting

  • Engineering

  • Law

  • Veterinary practice

  • Finance

  • Government

  • Construction

  • Energy

  • Aviation

  • Tourism

Professional registration

In countries where English is an important language for communication, proof of acceptable English language skills tests like IELTS is required for candidates and international students looking for professional registration.

Requirements for English language proficiency levels may vary between organisations, and professions, by country, and by jurisdiction. It depends on the individual professional organisations to consider the IELTS score and test type- IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training, whichever they require.

The level of English language proficiency may vary based on the job requirements, but generally, a score of 6.5 or higher is considered good enough for most jobs. It is advisable to check the specific language proficiency requirements with the employer or the job posting before taking the IELTS test.

IELTS for vocational training

IELTS is commonly used as a measure of English proficiency for academic and professional purposes, including vocational training. Many vocational training programs require applicants to demonstrate a certain level of English language proficiency.

The IELTS is designed to assess your English language skills practically and realistically, and it is accepted by thousands of organisations worldwide, including many vocational training programs. Before taking the test, it's a good idea to familiarise yourself with the formats of the test and to practice your English language skills as much as possible.

Also, the IELTS General Training test is usually required for vocational training, for example in the construction, hospitality and leisure, and tourism industries.
