The IELTS Listening test is designed to assess how well you understand spoken English in academic and everyday contexts. It consists of 40 questions divided into four parts, each based on different types of audio recordings — conversations, talks, and lectures.
Your IELTS Listening band score is calculated by converting your total number of correct answers (raw score) into a band score between 1 and 9. Each correct answer gives you one mark, and there are no negative marks for incorrect answers — so make sure to attempt every question. The band score from your Listening test contributes to your overall IELTS band score.
Once you complete the test, your raw score (out of 40) is converted into a band score according to a fixed conversion table. This table ensures fairness and consistency across all IELTS test modules.
The number of correct answers (Also called Raw Score) | Your band score |
|---|---|
39-40 | 9 |
37-38 | 8.5 |
35-36 | 8 |
32-34 | 7.5 |
30-31 | 7 |
26-29 | 6.5 |
23-25 | 6 |
18-22 | 5.5 |
16-17 | 5 |
13-15 | 4.5 |

This chart gives you a clear view of how IELTS Listening marks are converted to bands. For example:
A score of 35 correct answers gives you a Band 8.
A score of 30 correct answers gives you a Band 7.
A score of 23 correct answers equals Band 6.
