One of the most common IELTS Writing questions is: How many words should I write in Task 2?

The answer is straightforward:

You must write at least 250 words in IELTS Writing Task 2.

This applies to both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training Writing Task 2.

But writing more words does not automatically mean you will get a higher score.

What happens if I write less than 250 words?

You should avoid writing fewer than the required minimum.

If your answer is too short, you may not provide enough evidence of the language and task-response skills needed for a higher band.

More importantly, a short response may not fully address the question or develop your ideas sufficiently.

Is there a maximum word limit?

There is no stated maximum word count for Task 2. However, writing an extremely long answer is not necessarily beneficial. A very long response can:

  • take too much time

  • contain unnecessary ideas

  • increase the number of grammar mistakes

  • make your argument less focused

  • leave you without enough time to check your work

The goal should be a clear, relevant and well-developed answer, not the highest possible word count.

How many words should you aim for?

A practical target is around 270–300 words for many candidates.

This gives you enough space to develop your ideas while remaining manageable within the 40-minute time limit.

However, you do not need to stop at a particular number.

If your answer is 260 words and fully addresses the task, that can be more effective than a 350-word response containing repetition and irrelevant information.

How should you use your 40 minutes?

IELTS recommends spending about 40 minutes on Task 2.

A practical approach is:

5 minutes: Understand the question and plan your ideas.

30 minutes: Write your response.

5 minutes: Check grammar, spelling and task requirements.

You can adjust this based on your writing speed.

A simple Task 2 structure

A common structure is:

Introduction

Introduce the topic and clearly state your position where required.

Body paragraph 1

Present your first main idea and explain it with relevant supporting detail or an example.

Body paragraph 2

Present your second main idea and develop it.

Conclusion

Summarise your position or main points.

The exact structure can vary depending on the question.

Don't add words just to reach a target

Suppose you have written 260 relevant words.

Do not add unnecessary sentences simply because you think you need 300 words.

For example:

Weak approach:

Repeating the same idea in different words to increase the word count.

Better approach:

Developing your existing idea with a clear explanation or relevant example.

Does Task 2 really matter more?

Yes.

IELTS states that Task 2 carries more weight than Task 1 when calculating the Writing score.

This is one reason it is important to manage your time carefully and leave enough time to complete Task 2 properly.

How can you improve your Task 2 word count?

The best way is to practise writing complete essays under timed conditions.

After each essay, check:

  • total word count

  • whether every part of the question was answered

  • whether your main ideas were developed

  • whether examples were relevant

  • whether paragraphs were logically organised

  • whether grammar and spelling errors are recurring

Final takeaway

For IELTS Writing Task 2, write at least 250 words.

Aiming for roughly 270–300 words can be a useful practical target, but quality matters more than chasing a particular number.

Focus on answering the question fully, developing your ideas clearly and leaving enough time to check your response.
