When a verb is part of a longer sentence, it is often followed by a specific preposition.

  • I connect with my friends online.

  • She enjoys listening to classical music.

  • He expressed gratitude for my support.

There are no grammatical rules to help you know which preposition is used with which verb, so it's a good idea to try to learn them together. To help you do this, write new vocabulary in your notebook in a sentence or phrase. Here are some common verbs for each preposition.

1. Verbs with for

  • They’re searching for a new apartment.

  • He thanked her for her help.

  • I registered for the conference but couldn’t attend.

  • How do you ask for directions in Spanish?

  • I need to prepare for my presentation next week.

2. Verbs with from

  • This lotion protects you from sunburn.

  • Has she recovered from the flu yet?

  • He saved her from falling off the edge.

  • I suffer from chronic fatigue.

3. Verbs with in

  • She believes in taking risks.

  • Our team excels in customer service.

  • You must invest time if you want to grow professionally.

4. Verbs with of

  • I don't approve of wasting resources.

  • The old tree died of disease.

  • This perfume has a hint of vanilla.

5. Verbs with on

  • Their success will depend on hard work.

  • The series is based on true events.

  • If you keep interrupting, I can’t focus on my writing.

  • Come on! We’re counting on you!

  • We disagree on several issues, but we still respect each other.

6. Verbs with to

  • What kind of movies do you enjoy watching?

  • Can I introduce you to my colleague?

  • Please refer to the manual for further instructions.

  • Nobody replied to my inquiry.

  • She explained to me how the system works.

7. Verbs with with

  • I agree with your point of view.

  • My manager will provide you with further details if necessary.

  • We're struggling to cope with the workload.
