This guide explains exactly how to attempt the IELTS Listening test on a computer, so you know what to do at every stage of the test.
Step 1: Read the questions carefully
Before each recording starts, you will get time to read the questions on screen. Use this time to:
Understand what kind of information you need to listen for
Identify keywords like names, dates, numbers, and places
Note word limits (e.g. NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS)
Step 2: Listen and follow the questions on screen
Once the audio starts:
Listen carefully through the headphones
Questions appear in the same order as the audio
Follow the questions line by line as you listen
Do not stop listening even if you miss one answer
Step 3: Type your answers directly on the screen
As you hear the answer:
Type it directly into the answer box
Check spelling while typing
For numbers, type the exact number you hear
Do not add extra words beyond the word limit
Step 4: Stay focused and move on quickly
If you miss an answer:
Do not panic
Move to the next question immediately
Missing one question will not affect the rest of the test
Staying calm helps you score better.
Step 5: Use the extra 2 minutes to review
At the end of the Listening test, you get 2 extra minutes to:
Check spelling mistakes
Complete unanswered questions
Review your answers calmly
Use this time wisely — it can help improve your score.
Step 6: Submit and finish the Listening test
After reviewing:
Submit your answers on screen
The Listening section ends automatically
You then move on to the next section of the test.
